Writing changed my life. I built this so it can change yours too.
I started The Creative Writing Network because I know what it feels like to need a writing community and not be able to afford one. For years, I was a free member on a writing platform. I couldn't pay for a premium account, but I was there every day, reading other people's work, leaving feedback, showing up. That community mattered to me more than I can put into words. It was a place I belonged. That experience never left me. And when I decided to build TCWN, it shaped everything.
The Founding Principle
No one should ever feel they can't participate because of money. That's the line everything else is built around. Not as a tagline. As a rule. Basic membership here is free, and it always will be. Free members have full access to the community: the challenges, the forum, the feedback, all of it. The free experience is real and complete, not a stripped-down preview designed to push you toward paying. The paid tier, Emerald Membership at $5 a month, exists for one reason: to cover the cost of running the site. That's it. There's no profit motive here. Our monthly running costs are roughly $46. We break even with ten Emerald members. Ten. Every person who supports TCWN at $5 a month makes it possible for dozens more to participate for free. That feels right to me.
Why Writing
I have my 6th grade teacher, Mr. Stan Carroll, to thank for my love of writing. He saw something in me before I could see it in myself. Writing became the thing I could always come back to, through hard times, through joy, through everything. I've run writing workshops for junior high students. I've watched young people discover that their voice matters, that their stories are worth telling. That discovery can change a person. TCWN's Younger Writers section exists because of that. Teens and students deserve a space that's built for them: safe, encouraging, and real.
What TCWN is not
TCWN is not a platform trying to scale to millions. It's not venture-backed. It doesn't have investors. It doesn't have a growth target. What it has is a founding principle, a structure built around generosity, and a community that I genuinely believe in. I self-fund this out of my own pocket because I believe in it.
The Goal, Simply Put
A writing community where every member feels like they belong from day one. Where the most generous contributors are celebrated, not just the most prolific. Where a free member and a paid member stand in the same room. That's what I'm building. I hope you'll be part of it.
